Use word prediction to finish words while typing
When to use this goal
For students who type slowly because of motor or spelling needs and who have word prediction software available. Using the tool well (glancing at choices, picking the right word) takes practice. Fit depends on typing samples with the tool on, not grade.
- Baseline
- Watch 10 long words during typing and record whether the student used a correct prediction when one appeared. Also note typing speed with and without the tool.
- Tips
- Set the list short at first. The tool should save time; if it slows the student, adjust settings with the OT or AT specialist. Pair with mt-hw-018 (typing rate).
- Limits
- Requires access to the software in every class. Does not measure writing quality.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when typing a written assignment with word prediction turned on, the student will select a predicted word for words of four or more letters when the right choice appears independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly, 10 long words observed.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
