Walk the arrival route with a walker
When to use this goal
For students who walk with a walker or gait trainer and arrive at class long after peers, having stopped often or been pushed in a stroller or wheelchair for part of the way. A timed walk on the real arrival route decides fit.
- Baseline
- Time three arrivals from leaving the bus step to entering the classroom, noting rest stops, falls or near falls, and any part of the route where the student was carried or pushed. Ask the family how the student walks at home and whether mornings are better or worse.
- Tips
- Walking the arrival route can be good daily practice, but not if it leaves the student too tired to learn; the team can walk one way and use a wheelchair the other. Arriving with peers instead of after them is a social win worth naming in present levels.
- Limits
- Time does not show gait quality or fall risk; the PT watches those. Weather and backpacks change the task; keep conditions the same for data. Not for a student whose endurance is changing because of a health condition; check with the nurse and family.

Review: Unit fits the behavior. Duration measures how long something lasts. The behavior should describe an ongoing activity.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at or below the target (7 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
