Turn a walker in tight classroom spaces

K-2, PKOpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For walker users who move well in straight lines but get stuck in classroom aisles, at the end of a table or in the restroom stall, and need an adult to turn the walker for them. Observed turns in the classroom, not age, decide fit.

Baseline
Watch the first five tight turns of the day for a week and mark each as done alone, cued or turned by an adult. Note whether the student lifts or slides the walker and which way turns are harder.
Tips
Arrange the room so routes are wide enough, then teach turns for the spots that cannot change. Practicing during real transitions (to the rug, to the sink) gives many short chances a day.
Limits
Not for students whose walker is too big for the room; that is an equipment or layout issue. The goal does not measure walking distance or speed.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when moving between tables, cubbies and the group rug in the classroom, the student will turn or back up the walker in small steps to face the new direction without the walker catching on furniture, with no adult hands on the walker in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected daily during classroom transitions.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
