Carry class materials with a walker or crutches
When to use this goal
For students who walk well with a walker, crutches or cane but cannot carry books, a laptop or a lunch at the same time, so an adult carries everything. Observed trips with materials, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Record five class changes, noting what was carried, how (hands, bag, basket), who carried it, and any drops or near falls. Weigh the backpack; many students carry far more than the PT would advise.
- Tips
- Carrying their own things lets the student travel without an adult close by. Solve load first (a second set of books at home, digital texts), then teach the carrying method. The OT or PT picks the carrying method that keeps hands free for the device.
- Limits
- Not for students who need both hands on the device and cannot use a bag; use a different access plan. Does not measure speed or endurance.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when moving between classes with the materials for the next class, the student will carry the materials in a backpack, walker basket or tray attachment the whole way and set them down at the destination without dropping any, with no adult cues in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected on five class changes a week.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Mobility.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
