Hold a stretch for a set number of seconds

When to use this goal

For students who bounce through stretches, release within a second or two, or skip the stretching part of PE, especially students with tight muscles for whom daily stretching protects mobility. Base the choice on timing held stretches during baseline; the PT sets which stretches are safe and useful.

Baseline
Time three held stretches on two days from reaching the position until release or bouncing; use the median. Record which stretch and the position used so later timings match. The PT should choose stretches that match the student's needs and rule out positions that are unsafe.
Tips
Stretching happens every PE class, so the data cost is low. For students with a home stretching program, the family can use the same timer and count. Picture cards let the student run the routine without adult direction.
Limits
Holding time does not measure range of motion; the PT measures that separately. A stretch held with poor position is not useful; the adult checks position before timing. Not every student needs a flexibility goal; include it only when tightness affects participation.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the stretching portion of the PE warm-up, given a hamstring stretch demonstrated by the teacher, the student will independently hold the stretch position without bouncing and without releasing early for at least 20 seconds, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by duration recording collected weekly during the PE warm-up or therapy.

Baseline: 5 seconds.

  • Review: Unit fits the behavior. Duration measures how long something lasts. The behavior should describe an ongoing activity.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Physical Fitness & PE Participation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
