Follow the rules of a modified game in PE
When to use this goal
For students who run out of bounds, keep going after the stop signal, grab equipment out of turn, or do not know what their role is, so games break down around them. Use a rubric score on three games during baseline to decide which rules to teach first.
- Baseline
- Score three games with the rubric; two observers on one game will show whether the row descriptors are clear. Note which rows score lowest and whether the student can state the rules when asked; a student who cannot say the rules needs them taught, not reminders.
- Tips
- Post three or four rules with pictures and review them before each game. Start with games that have few rules and a clear structure. This supports peer acceptance and recess play; link it to a play participation goal when the student is left out.
- Limits
- Rubric scoring is a judgment; train the observer. Games differ in rule complexity; score only games with a similar number of rules. Does not measure the motor skills the game requires.
