Keep the heart rate in the target zone during activity
When to use this goal
Fits secondary students in fitness units who move at a pace too low to gain fitness, or who cannot pace themselves and either sprint and stop or coast, and who have a heart rate monitor available. Base the choice on a monitored session during baseline; the nurse or physician must set the safe zone for any student with a health condition.
- Baseline
- Record total minutes in the zone during three sessions from the monitor's log or by checking every minute. Note whether the student drops below the zone (needs to speed up) or goes above it (needs to slow down). Confirm the zone with the nurse for any student with a cardiac, respiratory, or medication-related restriction.
- Tips
- Many secondary PE programs already use monitors; use the class system. Teach the student to read the monitor and adjust pace, which is a lifetime fitness skill. Pair with the fitness log template so the student records sessions.
- Limits
- Monitors need a good fit and can misread; check the reading against a manual pulse once. Medical conditions may limit or forbid zone-based targets. Does not fit students who cannot read the monitor without help unless a color display is used.
