Use a treadmill or stationary bike for a set number of minutes
When to use this goal
Fits high school students whose transition plan includes using a fitness center or home equipment after graduation, and who currently need an adult to start the machine, set the pace, or keep going. Use a trial on the school's equipment during baseline to decide the starting time.
- Baseline
- Time continuous use on three days and use the median. Record whether the student can start and stop the machine, since that is often the actual barrier and belongs in the supports. Check for medical restrictions and have the PT confirm treadmill safety (rail use, speed) for students with balance concerns.
- Tips
- Pair with the weight room circuit and the fitness log templates for a complete lifetime fitness program. Use community facilities when the transition team can arrange it; the skill transfers better when practiced there. Teach the emergency stop first.
- Limits
- Equipment differs across facilities; expect a learning period at each new one. Does not measure intensity; add a heart rate condition if desired. Treadmills carry fall risk; the adult stays nearby for students with balance concerns regardless of the support level recorded.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a treadmill set to a walking speed in the school fitness room, the student will independently continue walking on the treadmill at the set speed without stopping or holding the rails for the whole time, starting and stopping the machine for at least 20 minutes, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by duration recording collected weekly during fitness class or community-based instruction.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (20 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
