Run a cardio machine's controls safely

When to use this goal

For older students who can walk on a treadmill or ride a bike but need help to start, set, and stop the machine, or who skip the safety clip and wiping down. Fit depends on a trial on the machines the student will use, not grade.

Baseline
Score the steps on the machine the student will use most. Machines differ, so teach each one separately.
Tips
The safety clip and stopping steps come first. Pair with mt-pe-018 for exercising for a set time.
Limits
Medical clearance may be needed. Machine panels change often; update picture cards.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Number of routine steps performed independently.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Task-analysis steps

Write each step so an observer can mark it done or not done.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A routine is broken into ordered steps; each step is recorded as independent, supported, or not completed.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, on a treadmill at a community fitness center, the student will use the machine from start to finish following the machine routine, performing all 7 steps independently, on 3 consecutive fitness sessions, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected each fitness session.

Baseline: 2 of 7 steps independently.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Task-analysis steps fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Task-analysis checklist gives task-analysis steps data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Physical Fitness & PE Participation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
