Hit a forehand with a short racket
When to use this goal
For students in a tennis, pickleball or badminton unit who reach the ball but push it with a stiff arm or face the net square. Present levels in the striking unit, not grade, decide fit. A shorter racket, a larger head or a slower foam ball keeps the skill within reach.
- Baseline
- Score the skill on the rubric across at least 3 PE sessions before setting a target, filming a few attempts if the family and school allow it so two scorers can agree. Score each component from what is seen, not from whether the ball went where it should. Record the racket and ball used; a change of either resets the baseline.
- Tips
- Fits a general PE racket unit with adapted PE support. Keep the feed consistent in height and speed, since a poor feed lowers the score for reasons that are not the student's. Pair with a rally or game template once form holds.
- Limits
- Form scores do not predict whether the student can keep a rally going under game pace. The template does not cover backhand or serving. Students with limited grip strength may need a strap or built-up handle before form can be judged.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 6 foam balls fed underhand from across a short court during a racket unit, the student will hit a forehand with the racket using a side turn, a back swing, contact beside the front foot and a follow-through toward the target independently, earning a score of at least 4 out of 5 on a 5-point forehand form rubric scored 0 or 1 per component, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks during racket units.
