Turn and jump a short rope with form
When to use this goal
For students who can jump with two feet but cannot yet coordinate turning their own rope with the jump. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. A beaded or weighted rope sized to the student makes the rope easier to feel and time.
- Baseline
- Watch three 20-second tries on two days and score each component. Check rope length (handles near the armpits when the student stands on the middle) before scoring, since a wrong length breaks the timing.
- Tips
- The split rope lets the student practice wrist turns and timing without tripping. Pair a rubric probe with counting jumps if the student is motivated by a number. Continuous jump time belongs to fitness goals; this template scores the movement pattern.
- Limits
- Form does not show how long the student can keep jumping. Floor surfaces change the feel of the jump. Students with heart or joint conditions need the nurse or PT to clear repeated jumping.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a beaded jump rope sized to the student during a jump rope unit, the student will turn the rope from the wrists and jump it with small two-foot jumps, landing on the balls of the feet independently, earning a score of at least 6 out of 8 on a 4-component self-turned rope rubric scored 0 to 2 per component, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks during jump rope units.
Baseline: 3 out of 8 rubric points.

- Score each sample with a 4-component self-turned rope rubric scored 0 to 2 per component. Attach or reference the rubric's score descriptors.
- Use the same prompt type and conditions for each scored sample.
- If two people score, check agreement on a few samples before relying on the data.
