Color by code using a key

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who mix up the key, skip spaces, or color the wrong region on color-by-number or color-by-code pages used in many classrooms. The task combines scanning a key, matching, and coloring control. Fit depends on a trial, not grade.

Baseline
Score every space on two pages. Separate matching errors (wrong color) from coloring control (outside the lines, see mt-fm-017).
Tips
Classroom color-by-code math pages make natural probes. Placing the key closer cuts errors for students who lose track.
Limits
Math or reading in the code may be the real barrier; use easy codes for the visual goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a color-by-code math page with 6 codes, the student will color each space the color its number or code shows in the key independently with at least 90% accuracy on spaces colored to match the key, on 3 consecutive weekly work samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Visual-Motor & Visual-Perceptual Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
