Visual-Motor & Visual-Perceptual Skills IEP goals for kindergarten to grade 2

28 of the visual-motor & visual-perceptual skills templates in the library are written for kindergarten to grade 2. Each opens in the builder, where the grade band is a starting point and the baseline comes from your own assessment.

Copy basic shapes from a printed model

    Copying basic shapes

By the annual IEP review date, given a printed model of a circle, square, triangle, and cross and a pencil, the student will independently copy each shape so that it is closed, has the correct number of sides and corners, and is recognizable without the model with at least 85% accuracy on shapes copied correctly, on 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly during a writing center or OT session.

  • K-2, 3-5Percent accuracy

    Copy overlapping and multi-part designs

    Copying complex designs

By the annual IEP review date, given a printed model of six two-part designs (overlapping shapes, shapes with internal lines) and a pencil, the student will copy each design so that each part is present, in the correct position relative to the others, and recognizable independently with at least 80% accuracy on designs copied with all parts correctly placed, on 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly during OT or a drawing task.

  • PK, K-2Opportunities

Build a block structure to match a model

    Block and construction models

By the annual IEP review date, given a built model of 5 blocks and a matching set of blocks, the student will build a structure that matches the model in the number, position, and orientation of blocks independently in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during a block center or OT session.

  • PK, K-2, 3-5Percent accuracy

Copy a pegboard or pattern-block pattern from a model

    Pattern reproduction

By the annual IEP review date, given a pegboard, colored pegs, and a printed model of an 8-peg pattern, the student will place each piece so that the pattern matches the model in position, color, and orientation independently with at least 90% accuracy on pieces placed correctly, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during a math center or OT session.

  • PK, K-2, 3-5Opportunities

Draw through a maze staying inside the path

    Mazes and paths

By the annual IEP review date, given a simple maze with half-inch-wide paths and two turns, the student will independently draw a line from start to finish without crossing the walls more than twice and without turning the paper in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during a fine motor center or OT session.

  • K-2, 3-5Percent accuracy

Keep place on a line of print without losing it

    Visual tracking for reading

By the annual IEP review date, given a passage at the student's independent reading level with 10 or more lines, the student will independently read each line and move to the start of the next line without skipping or repeating a line with at least 95% accuracy on line transitions completed without losing the place, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during oral reading.

In kindergarten through grade 2, visual-motor & visual-perceptual skills goals target foundational skills and are measured with short probes, word lists, or direct observation that fit a young student's attention span. Criteria usually use small item sets and frequent checks.

Frequently asked questions

How are visual-motor & visual-perceptual skills goals measured in the early grades?

With brief, repeatable measures: a one-minute probe, a 10-item set, or a few observed opportunities per day. The goal's mastery rule states how many measurements must meet the criterion.

Should early-grade goals be tied to grade-level standards?

Goals come from the student's present levels and should enable progress in the general curriculum, but the criterion is set from baseline data, not copied from a standard. The standard can inform what skill to target.

How many goals should a K-2 student have?

One per area of need identified in the evaluation. Young students often have goals across several areas (communication, early literacy, self-regulation), so keeping each goal to one measure keeps data collection realistic.
