Highlight the sentence that answers a question
When to use this goal
For students who answer questions from memory, often wrongly, instead of looking back at the text. Marking the answer sentence builds the look-back habit. Present levels decide the text level.
- Baseline
- Score both the marked sentence and the answer. Note whether the student skims for key words from the question.
- Tips
- The look-back habit helps on tests and assignments. Pairs with the core literal questions template.
- Limits
- Literal questions only; inferences need the evidence templates.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after reading an unpracticed instructional-level passage, given 6 literal questions and a highlighter, the student will look back, highlight the sentence that holds the answer, and write or say the answer independently with at least 85% accuracy on questions with the answer sentence marked and answered, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Comprehension.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
