Compare firsthand and secondhand accounts

6-8, 3-5Rubric scoreTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students who treat a diary entry and a textbook account of the same event as interchangeable. Comparing them shows what each kind of source can tell. Present levels decide the text level; primary sources can be adapted.

Baseline
Read sources aloud if older language is a barrier. Note whether the student knows which source is firsthand.
Tips
Coordinate with the social studies teacher. Adapted primary sources keep the task accessible.
Limits
Older language makes primary sources hard; adaptation changes the source somewhat.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after reading a short adapted primary source and a textbook passage about the same historical event, the student will explain one thing the firsthand account shows that the secondhand account does not, and one the other way around independently, earning a score of at least 5 out of 6 on a 2-row source comparison rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored responses, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 2 out of 6 rubric points.
