Source a primary document: who, when, and why
When to use this goal
For middle school students who read a primary source for its content without asking who made it, when, and for what reason. Sourcing is the first step of historical reading. Present levels decide the text level; documents can be adapted.
- Baseline
- Read the source line aloud if needed. Purpose is the hardest; note whether the student guesses without a clue.
- Tips
- Coordinate with the social studies teacher. Short sources work well.
- Limits
- Background knowledge affects purpose answers.
