When to use this goal

For older students with significant support needs who read or hear short adapted news stories and need a respectful, age-matched way to show what they understood. Present levels in access decide the format.

Baseline
Use real news topics the student cares about. Record the access method. Five items per story; use two stories per session.
Tips
Adapted news keeps reading connected to the world peers talk about. Pairs with the adapted news fluency template.
Limits
Answer choices allow guessing; use enough items.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after reading or hearing a 3- to 5-sentence adapted news story, given 3 photos and 4 questions, the student will choose the photo that matches the story and answer the who, what, where, and when questions by selecting or saying the answer independently with at least 80% accuracy on photo match and story questions, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Comprehension.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
