Label articles as news or opinion

When to use this goal

For students who treat every article as straight fact, including editorials, columns, and reviews. Present levels and reading level, not grade, decide whether the articles are read independently or aloud.

Baseline
Remove the section labels from some items so the student has to use the writing itself. Score an item correct only when the label and the clue are both right.
Tips
Teach the clues one at a time: section labels, bylines marked opinion or column, first-person words, and judging words (should, best, unfair). Follow with a goal on evaluating claims once the student can separate the two.
Limits
News reports often quote people's opinions, which can confuse scoring; start with clear examples. Online articles may carry labels a student can rely on without reading the text.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 unpracticed short articles from a news site or paper, mixing news reports, editorials, columns, and reviews, the student will label each piece as news or opinion and point to one clue in the text, such as the section label, first-person words, or a stated judgment independently with at least 85% accuracy on articles labeled with a supporting clue, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 45% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Comprehension.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
