Read words with diphthongs and other vowel teams
When to use this goal
For students who read common vowel teams (ai, ee, oa) but stall on diphthongs and variant vowels (oi, oy, ou, ow, au, aw, oo), which a phonics inventory will show. Base the choice on where the inventory breaks down; these patterns are often the last gap for older students.
- Baseline
- Probe each team separately with a few words so the annual list starts with the ones not yet known. Decide in advance how to score teams with two sounds (ow in cow and snow, oo in moon and book): either pronunciation or only the one that makes a real word. Use unfamiliar words.
- Tips
- Teach the teams in pairs by position (oi inside, oy at the end). The mixed-pattern condition checks that the student chooses the right pattern rather than applying the last one taught. Use the passage condition as the annual step for students who already read lists well.
- Limits
- Several of these teams have more than one sound, so scoring rules must be explicit and consistent. Lists must be matched in difficulty from week to week. Does not measure rate.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a list of 20 unfamiliar one-syllable words with the vowel teams oi, oy, ou, ow, au, aw, and oo, the student will read each word aloud independently with at least 85% accuracy on vowel-team words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
