Timed word chain list

K-2, 3-5Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read CVC words correctly in random lists but slow down or misread when words look almost alike (pit, pot, pat, pan). Chain lists force attention to every letter at speed. Present levels should show accurate untimed CVC reading.

Baseline
Use three different chains and take the median. Count a word wrong if it is read as the previous word (perseveration), and tally that error separately.
Tips
A quick daily warm-up. Underlining the change is a scaffold to fade. Graph scores with the student.
Limits
Chain lists are easier to predict than random lists; check transfer with a random list too.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute list of CVC words arranged so each word differs from the one before by one letter, the student will read the words aloud in order down the list independently at a rate of at least 35 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 15 words read correctly per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
