Reduce first-letter and picture guessing

K-2FrequencyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For early readers who look at the first letter or the picture and say a word that fits (house for home), instead of reading through the word. This habit holds back decoding even when the patterns are taught. Present levels from an error analysis decide fit.

Baseline
Mark each error on an examiner copy and code it: first-letter guess, picture guess, or other. Only the first two are counted for this goal.
Tips
Pair with the continuous blending or decoding routine template, so the student has a replacement strategy. Cover pictures until the word is read.
Limits
Coding errors takes judgment; agree on examples. Fewer guesses alone do not mean accurate decoding; track accuracy too.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during oral reading of a 100-word decodable or leveled passage at the student's instructional level, the student will reduce saying a word that matches only the first letter or the picture instead of the printed word (self-corrected words not counted) to no more than 2 times per 100-word passage, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.

Baseline: 8 times per 100-word passage.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
