Schwa in two-syllable words

3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who sound out two-syllable words with every vowel full (a-bout said with a long a, le-mon with a short o stressed) and then do not recognize the word. Learning that unstressed vowels often say /uh/ unlocks many words. Present levels should show closed and open syllables are solid.

Baseline
Use words the student knows orally, so a correct reading is recognizable. Note words read with every vowel full; those show the target habit.
Tips
Teach the flex: sound it out, then say it the way people talk. Pairs with the vowel flexing template.
Limits
Schwa depends on stress, which varies across speakers.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 15 printed two-syllable words with a schwa in one syllable (such as about, lemon, pencil, sofa), the student will read each word aloud, saying the unstressed vowel as a schwa so it sounds like the real word independently with at least 85% accuracy on two-syllable schwa words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
