Made-up two-syllable words

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students whose real-word reading of long words may come partly from memory. Made-up two-syllable words (blendip, fostrel) check that syllable decoding is in place. Present levels decide the syllable types included.

Baseline
Accept more than one reading where division is ambiguous. Tally errors by syllable type.
Tips
Explain the purpose; older students accept made-up words when they know why.
Limits
Ambiguous items need a scoring rule decided in advance.

Percent of attempted items answered correctly.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Brief, standardized probes given at regular intervals and scored the same way each time.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 15 printed made-up two-syllable words built from taught syllable types, the student will read each word aloud independently with at least 80% accuracy on made-up two-syllable words, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
