Decode names in social studies text
When to use this goal
For middle school students who stop at every proper noun in social studies text (Mesopotamia, Constantinople, Tenochtitlan), losing the thread. Names do not follow English patterns fully, so a quick attempt-and-move-on habit matters. Present levels decide fit.
- Baseline
- Count a close, consistent attempt as correct. Record stops over 5 seconds and skipped names.
- Tips
- Teach that a consistent close attempt is fine for names; meaning comes first.
- Limits
- Correct pronunciation of names varies; the goal rewards a workable attempt, not perfection.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during reading of a social studies text, when the student meets an unfamiliar multisyllabic proper noun, the student will break the name into syllables, read a close attempt, and keep reading independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
