Timed nonsense words across syllable types
When to use this goal
For high school students in a decoding intervention whose real-word reading partly reflects memory. A timed nonsense-word probe with all syllable types tracks decoding growth without that help. Present levels should show the syllable types taught.
- Baseline
- Explain the purpose of made-up words so the student does not feel tricked. Take the median of three probes.
- Tips
- Progress-monitoring tool for older students in structured literacy. Share the graph with the student.
- Limits
- Teacher-made probes are not normed.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of one- and two-syllable nonsense words using all six syllable types, the student will read each nonsense word aloud as a whole word across the rows independently at a rate of at least 30 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 12 words read correctly per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Use the same timing length and probe type every session.
- Rate = number correct ÷ minutes timed.
- Target unit: words read correctly per minute.
