Check a decoded word with text-to-speech and reread

When to use this goal

For high school students who read on devices and either guess at hard words or let text-to-speech read everything. Decoding first and then checking with text-to-speech builds skill while keeping access. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Watch five unfamiliar words. Note whether the student tries first, checks, and rereads, and how often the first try was right.
Tips
Text-to-speech stays available for full access to course content. This goal is for practice time.
Limits
Self-checking takes time; use it in practice texts, not timed tasks.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during independent reading of a digital course text, when the student meets an unfamiliar word, the student will try to decode the word aloud, play the word with text-to-speech, and reread the sentence with the correct word independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
