Timed true-or-false sentence reading
When to use this goal
For middle school students who read mostly silently and whose oral reading no longer shows the full picture. Sentence verification measures how quickly the student reads simple sentences for meaning. Sentence difficulty comes from present levels, not grade.
- Baseline
- Give three probes and use the median of correct marks minus incorrect marks, divided by 3. Subtracting errors keeps guessing from inflating the score. Watch for students who read every sentence aloud under their breath, which slows them down and is worth noting.
- Tips
- Teacher-made sentence sets work if every sentence uses common words and has one clear answer. Keep the set the same type all year. Combine with a maze or passage measure for a fuller silent reading picture.
- Limits
- Sentences are short and simple, so the probe shows speed of basic sentence reading, not comprehension of complex text. Background knowledge can affect some sentences; avoid culture-specific facts.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 3-minute probe of unrelated simple sentences that are each clearly true or false, such as a dog can fly (total divided by 3 for the per-minute rate), the student will read each sentence silently and mark it true or false independently at a rate of at least 16 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 9 correct responses per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Fluency.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
