Take a reading turn during class read-alouds

When to use this goal

For older students who pass on or avoid reading turns during class read-alouds because of past struggles, even when they can read the section with preparation. Fit depends on present levels showing the student reads the class text with preview; the goal builds access to the class routine, not speed.

Baseline
Count read-aloud turns offered over two weeks (a set of 5 turns is one data point) and how many the student took, and with what support. Talk with the student about what makes reading aloud hard; their answer shapes the support list.
Tips
Preview is the key support. The general education teacher must agree to give the student their section ahead of time. Reading aloud is never required of a student who does not want to; build the student's choice into the plan and pair this with a self-advocacy goal if needed.
Limits
The count reflects willingness and preparation as well as reading. Cold calling makes the routine unpredictable; the goal assumes a predictable turn order.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a class read-around, given the section the student will read 5 minutes ahead so they can preview it, the student will read the assigned section aloud to the class when it is their turn independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of class read-alouds, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Fluency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
