Tell apart b, d, p, and q

When to use this goal

For students whose letter inventory is otherwise strong but who persistently confuse mirror-image letters past the point where most peers have sorted them out. Base the choice on error analysis of naming and reading data; reversals alone are not a reason for this goal before mid-first grade.

Baseline
Use 20 trials with the four letters in roughly equal numbers. Record each error as a specific swap (b read as d) because most students confuse only one pair. Check whether the same confusion appears in writing and in word reading; it often does, and both should be tracked.
Tips
Teach one letter of the pair to mastery before introducing its partner, and tie each to a consistent cue. The text condition is the real test, since the letters sit among others. Fade the keyword card before counting the goal met.
Limits
Chance performance is 25 percent with four letters and 50 percent with two, so set the baseline against that. Reversals are developmentally common through about age seven and are not by themselves a sign of a reading difficulty. A rate measure may be needed later if accuracy is fine but hesitation remains.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 lowercase letter cards drawn only from b, d, p, and q, shown one at a time in random order, the student will say the name of each letter independently with at least 95% accuracy on confusable letter trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 55% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
