Find and name letters in classroom print

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who name letters on cards but do not notice or name them in books, signs, and labels. This is a generalization goal; base the choice on observation across settings.

Baseline
Plan 8 opportunities per observation using letters the student already names on cards, so the goal measures transfer rather than new learning. Record the font and size of the print where errors happen; decorative fonts and all-caps labels are common sources of trouble.
Tips
Use alongside a card-based naming goal to show that letters are recognized in real print. Letter hunts, name tags, and labels on bins give natural opportunities. Families can do the same with cereal boxes and signs at home.
Limits
Opportunities depend on what print is available that day, so plan them. Environmental print uses varied fonts and cases, which makes some items harder than cards. Does not show letter sounds or reading.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during shared reading of a big book, when the adult asks the student to find a named letter on the page, the student will point to the named letter in the print independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive observation days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
