Read b and d words without swaps

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who name b and d correctly as single letters but swap them inside words (dad read as bab, bed read as deb). Present levels should show they decode CVC words otherwise.

Baseline
Score only the b and d positions; other decoding errors are tallied separately. Words with both letters (bad, dab) are hardest; include several.
Tips
Teach a single strategy (the bed cue or a fist cue) and use it everywhere. The isolated-letter template for b, d, p, and q comes first for students who still confuse the letters alone.
Limits
Reversals are common in early grades; use this goal when they persist past first grade or block reading. Accuracy in word lists may not carry into passages.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 decodable words containing b or d, such as bad, dig, bud, and bed, in random order, the student will read each word aloud with the b and d sounds in the right places independently with at least 95% accuracy on words with b or d read without a swap, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 55% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
