Spot opinions dressed up as facts

9-12, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For older students who can tell plain facts from plain opinions but miss opinions written to sound factual ("everyone agrees", "studies prove" with no source, "the only sensible choice"). Present levels in critical reading, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
Give two probes and look at the third category; most students sort those statements as fact. Use current, school-appropriate topics.
Tips
Links well to civics, health and media units. Students who will vote, shop or apply for jobs soon meet this kind of language daily.
Limits
Items must be written so experts would agree on the label. The goal does not check whether a stated fact is true; pair with source evaluation work for that.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 12 statements from editorials, ads and social media posts, the student will label each statement as checkable fact, plain opinion, or opinion stated as fact and name the word or move that gives it away independently with at least 80% accuracy on statements labeled, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 45% accuracy.
