Name the persuasion technique in an ad
When to use this goal
For students who take ads at face value and cannot name how an ad tries to win them over. Present levels in comprehension and vocabulary, not grade, decide fit. Print, video and social media ads all work.
- Baseline
- Give one probe and record which techniques are confused. Students often call any ad with a person in it a famous person ad. Choose ads that use one technique clearly.
- Tips
- Use ads aimed at the students' age group. Pair with writing or designing an ad that uses a technique on purpose.
- Limits
- Real ads often use more than one technique; accept any technique clearly present. The goal does not measure decisions the student makes as a shopper.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 print or online ads chosen to show one technique each, the student will name the technique each ad uses (bandwagon, famous person, glittering words, fear, or facts and numbers) and point to the part that shows it independently with at least 80% accuracy on ads analyzed, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Literary Analysis & Author's Craft.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
