Pick the picture that rhymes
When to use this goal
For young students or students with limited speech who are not yet producing rhymes, as shown by an informal rhyme check. A receptive picture format is the easiest entry to rhyme. Base the choice on the student's response options.
- Baseline
- Confirm the student names all the pictures first; an unknown picture makes the item unscorable. Use 10 items with the rhyming picture in varied positions. Chance is 33 percent in a field of 3, so a baseline near that means the skill is not yet present. Avoid distractors that begin with the same sound as the target, which pulls some students toward alliteration.
- Tips
- Pairs naturally with rhyming books and songs. Move to the rhyme production goal in core once recognition is steady. A good choice for students who use AAC, since pointing is the only response needed.
- Limits
- Rhyme is only loosely linked to later decoding compared with phoneme skills, so do not let it delay phoneme work. Picture naming differences (bunny versus rabbit) change the answer; standardize the names. Field size limits how much the score can tell you.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken word with its picture and a choice of 3 pictures, one of which rhymes, the student will point to the picture whose name rhymes with the spoken word independently with at least 85% accuracy on rhyme recognition items, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
