Change the first or last sound

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For first- and second-grade students who isolate first and last sounds but cannot swap one, which mirrors the change from one word to the next in word chains. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Mix first-sound and last-sound items. Last-sound changes are usually harder; tally them separately.
Tips
Practice orally, then with tiles, then move to letter tiles in phonics. Quick, game-like rounds work well.
Limits
Oral-only work does not show the student can do it with letters.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken CVC word and the direction to change the last sound to a named sound, the student will say the new word independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.
