Rhyme race: rhyming words in one minute

K-2Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who produce one rhyme when asked but slowly, with long pauses, which shows the skill is not yet automatic. Present levels should show reliable single-rhyme production.

Baseline
Use three different starting words with many rhymes (at, ig, op families). Count each different rhyme; repeats do not count. Note whether the student uses the alphabet in order, which is a good strategy.
Tips
Fun to graph. Made-up words show the skill as well as real words.
Limits
Vocabulary affects real-word rhymes; count made-up words to keep the focus on sounds.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken one-syllable word and 1 minute to say words that rhyme with it, the student will say different real or made-up words that rhyme with the word independently at a rate of at least 9 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 correct responses per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
