Reverse the sounds in a word

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper-elementary students with solid segmentation and deletion who need practice holding and reordering sounds, an advanced task linked to spelling. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Use real-word reversals first. Note whether the student reverses letters (spelling) rather than sounds; ship reversed by sound is /p/ /i/ /sh/.
Tips
A game-like challenge for students who find routine drills boring. Keep sessions short.
Limits
Working memory affects reversal; tiles reduce that load.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken CVC word whose reversal is a real word (such as pat to tap) and the direction to say it backward, the student will say the sounds in reverse order and then say the new word independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
