Pick the picture after a sound change
When to use this goal
For students who do not speak, or whose speech is hard to score, who are ready for phoneme manipulation. After hearing a change (say cat, change /k/ to /h/), the student selects the picture of the new word. Present levels in access decide the field size.
- Baseline
- Include the original word as a distractor, so a student who did not change the sound is caught. Record access method and response time.
- Tips
- Extends accessible PA work beyond blending. Plan with the SLP and AT team.
- Limits
- Picture choices limit the words that can be used. Chance success is 33% with 3 pictures.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
