Change a sound in a multisyllabic word

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle and high school students who manipulate sounds in short words but lose track in longer ones, which matches their errors on multisyllabic words. Words come from age-respectful content. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Note whether errors come at syllable boundaries or inside blends. Repeat items once if the student asks and note it.
Tips
Short daily practice at the start of a reading intervention block. Connect to the next decoding or spelling task.
Limits
Working memory affects long-word tasks; tiles or written syllables can lower that load once the skill is building.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken two- or three-syllable word and the direction to delete or change one named sound (say contest without /n/), the student will say the new word independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
