Name the vowel sound in each syllable

9-12, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students whose spelling of long words drops or confuses vowels, especially in unstressed syllables. Hearing the vowel in each syllable supports spelling and decoding. Present levels decide fit.

Baseline
Accept the schwa sound for unstressed syllables. Score each syllable's vowel. Dialect affects vowels; agree on accepted sounds.
Tips
Supports spelling of long words and pairs with schwa decoding work.
Limits
Vowel naming is hard even for skilled readers in fast speech; say words at a natural but clear pace.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken two- and three-syllable words from course vocabulary, the student will say each syllable and then the vowel sound in it independently with at least 85% accuracy on syllable vowel sounds identified, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Awareness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
