Make the return sweep to the next line
When to use this goal
For kindergarten students who track a single line but, at the end of it, go back along the same line or jump to the wrong line. Present levels in tracking one line left to right show readiness.
- Baseline
- Count ten line ends across a session. An opportunity counts if the finger goes to the start of the next line without help. Note line breaks in the middle of a sentence, which are harder.
- Tips
- Big books with large spacing help at first. A reading strip or index card can be faded later. Students with visual tracking needs may need the strip longer; consult the TVI or OT.
- Limits
- Measures the motor and directional habit, not reading. Pages with print around pictures make the next line unclear; use simple layouts for probes.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
