Write heart words from memory after mapping them

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read some heart words but cannot picture their spelling, which suggests the words are not yet firmly mapped. Writing from memory checks that the letters, not only the shape, are stored. Choose the words from an irregular-word inventory in present levels.

Baseline
Dictate 10 words that were mapped in recent lessons. Note whether errors are in the regular part (a phonics gap) or the irregular part (a memory gap); the fix is different. Accept letter tiles or typing for students who find handwriting slow.
Tips
Mapping means saying each sound, linking it to its letters, and marking the part to learn by heart. Short daily practice works better than long weekly sessions. Pairs with the read-and-point heart word template.
Limits
Writing depends on letter formation and spelling skills too. Words mapped in the same lesson may be confused with each other at first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, the day after a mapping lesson in which 5 heart words were sounded out, spelled, and the irregular part marked, the student will write each dictated heart word with every letter in the right order, including the irregular part independently with at least 85% accuracy on heart words written correctly from memory, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
