High-frequency phrases on a 1-minute probe

When to use this goal

For students who read high-frequency words accurately one at a time but slowly when they appear together in phrases (in the box, I want to, over there). Fit depends on present levels showing accurate single-word reading.

Baseline
Count every correct word in the phrases read in 1 minute. Take the median of three probes. Note whether the student pauses between words in a phrase; that is the habit this goal aims to change.
Tips
Phrase practice bridges word lists and passages. Use the phrases in short sentences once the rate grows. The core accuracy template on phrases covers reading phrases correctly; this one measures speed.
Limits
Practiced phrase sets can be memorized; rotate the order and add new phrases. The probe does not show phrasing in real text.

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of 2- to 4-word phrases made of taught high-frequency words, the student will read the phrases aloud, reading each phrase as a group independently at a rate of at least 55 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 25 correct words per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
