Sight words during a partner game

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who read taught words with the teacher at the table but freeze or guess during games and centers with peers. Fit depends on present levels showing the words are read accurately in one-to-one practice.

Baseline
Observe the first 10 turns of a game. Note words read correctly, words skipped, and words the partner read for the student. Compare with one-to-one accuracy on the same words.
Tips
Games give many low-stress chances to read the same words. Teach the game first with known words. Students who use AAC can say the word with their device.
Limits
Partner behavior changes the count. Game cards repeat, so scores may reflect memory of the card set.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute partner board or card game in which each turn shows one taught sight word, the student will read the word on their turn aloud to the partner before moving on independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, on 3 of 4 observed games, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 4 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
