Sort own word cards: known or practice

3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who practice sight words but cannot tell which ones they really know, so practice time goes to words already mastered. Fit depends on present levels showing a word bank of at least 20 words.

Baseline
Watch the student sort and then check each card. Count sorts that match the student's actual reading. Note whether errors are over-sorting (calling a word known when it was sounded out).
Tips
Builds self-monitoring and makes practice efficient. Practice pile words get extra review that day.
Limits
Measures accurate self-judgment, not how many words are known; keep a separate word count.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during independent word practice, given their personal word bank of 10 to 15 cards, the student will independently read each card and place it in the known pile only when read correctly without sounding out in at least 13 of 15 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 6 of 15 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
