Use a personal word ring while writing

3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper-elementary students who keep a personal ring of hard-to-spell high-frequency words but do not use it during writing. Fit depends on present levels showing the student can read the words on the ring.

Baseline
Review drafts for ring words that were misspelled, which shows missed chances, and watch for the student using the ring. Five chances per block is typical; record the actual number.
Tips
Keep the ring short (20 to 30 words) and personal. Remove words once the student spells them reliably.
Limits
Overlaps with spelling; this goal counts locating and reading the word on the ring.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute writing block, when the student needs a word that is on their personal word ring, the student will find the needed word on the ring and copy it into the writing independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 observed writing blocks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
