Use Greek word parts to define science words

6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students meeting science terms built from Greek parts (bio, geo, hydro, therm, photo, logy, meter) who memorize each term separately. Fit depends on present levels showing the student can read the terms or have them read aloud.

Baseline
Use words the student has not been taught as whole words, so the probe measures word-part use. Accept working definitions that capture the core meaning (hydrology: study of water). Note whether the error is splitting or meaning.
Tips
Coordinate the part list with the science teacher. The core morphology template covers prefixes and suffixes in general; this one targets combining forms in science.
Limits
Working definitions from parts are approximate; some terms need more than their parts. Reading the words is a separate skill.

Percent of attempted items answered correctly.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Scoring completed student work (permanent products) against a defined answer key or checklist.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 unfamiliar science words built from taught Greek word parts, the student will split each word into its Greek parts, give the meaning of each part, and write a working definition of the whole word independently with at least 80% accuracy on science words with a correct working definition from their parts, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
