Choose the word form that fits the sentence
When to use this goal
For students who know a base word but use the wrong form in reading and writing (decide, decision, decisive). This often appears with students learning English or with language needs. Present levels decide the word families.
- Baseline
- Score the word choice and the part of speech separately, then combine for the item. Note which suffixes cause errors (-tion, -ive, -ize).
- Tips
- Teach families together: create, creation, creative, creatively. The skill feeds directly into writing, so check that it shows up in drafts.
- Limits
- Choosing from options is easier than producing the form. Part-of-speech labels may need teaching first.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 12 sentences, each with a blank and a choice of 3 forms of the same word family, the student will choose the word form that fits each sentence and name its part of speech independently with at least 90% accuracy on sentences completed with the correct word form, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
