Label a word's connotation
When to use this goal
For middle school students who miss an author's attitude because they treat near-synonyms as equal (thrifty and stingy, curious and nosy). Fit depends on present levels showing the student knows the basic meanings.
- Baseline
- Score an item correct when the label fits and the opposite word is reasonable. Neutral words are the hardest; include two or three. Note whether errors come from not knowing the word or from missing the attitude.
- Tips
- Use real character descriptions and ads, where connotation does real work. Follow with a writing task choosing words to describe a character two ways.
- Limits
- Connotation can depend on context and culture; accept reasoned answers. Labels show recognition, not use.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
