Collect new words from independent reading

6-8FrequencyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students who read independently but notice few new words, so their vocabulary grows slowly. Fit depends on present levels showing a regular independent reading time.

Baseline
Count complete entries (word, sentence, and a meaning guess) over two weeks. Check that entries come from the student's reading, not from a list.
Tips
Share collected words in small group and add the best ones to a class wall. Letting the student choose words keeps the habit going.
Limits
Entries are a permanent product, so the adult cannot see when they were made. Collecting words does not show learning them.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the week's independent reading time, given a word log or sticky notes, the student will record a new or interesting word with the sentence it came from and a guess at its meaning independently at least 4 times per week, in 4 of 5 consecutive weeks, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.

Baseline: 0 times per week.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
